What would happen during a collapse?
I was talking to a friend of mine today about some things that, a few years ago, would have been considered tin foil hat thinking. He had sent me an email that gave the idea that FEMA could confiscate your food during a time of need (oddly enough, another friend and reader had sent me some of his thoughts on a bully system, that actually fit into this same idea).
We talked about the possibilities martial law, gun control and food confiscation. Before he got off the phone, he said that he was trying to talk his partner into moving their business before things went south for good.
The rest of the day, I’ve had the thought nagging at me. Could FEMA actually get away with confiscating our food stores, the things we have all worked our butts off to have in case of a collapse? What kind of event could happen to make them try? How would this scenario transpire?
After I came home and sat here at the computer getting my thoughts straight, it dawned on me. Yes, they most certainly could come and take anything from you they want, and it wouldn’t take very much to set it all off.
Think about it for a moment. How much of our God given rights have been chipped away already, in the name of security? If there was an economic collapse (which will happen), there would be a social collapse as well, at least in the cities. Just-in-time (JIT) shipping is the model that every Wal-Mart, grocery store chain and Dollar store uses to bring in the things they need, without having to have everything at the store. Everyone uses this system now. The up side for stores is they don’t have to keep large inventories of seasonals stored in a back room anymore. The down side is in a severe economic collapse or if trucks can’t get inventories to the store, the shelves empty out –quickly.
How long would society in a city the size of Atlanta or Los Angeles or Miami go without food and other necessities, before they started rioting in the streets? Even a smaller city, like the one I live in would start have a societal collapse within a week.
The reason for this is your average person doesn’t think ahead anymore. Just like the JIT freight system mentioned above, people only buy what they need right this minute.
How much rioting would it take for martial law to be imposed on entire cities, states or even the United States? Martial law changes everything. When martial law is declared, democracy dies. At that point, it is entirely feasible to see FEMA come knocking on doors. They could come in and check to see if you “have more food than you need”, and if you did, they could confiscate it.
It wouldn’t happen right away, of course. First there would be T.V. spots, asking you to “do the right thing”. They would request you voluntarily turn over anything you have extra. Then, they could use a an old idea that is tried and true. It is an idea that has been used by many of the “greats” form Stalin to Hitler and Mao Tse Tung. If you see someone stockpiling, come and report it.
How many of us would be turned in?
The only way to hold on to anything of value is to keep it out of site. Keep it separated and hidden form prying eyes. Don’t tell anyone what you are doing or what you have. Don’t buy large amounts of any food, and pay cash as much as possible.
Unfortunately, now may very well be the time to start practicing stealth shopping.
Thanks for taking the time to read my rant.
